Tunnel Lighting 2025
The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection joined CTDOT, local advocates, and community partners to celebrate a new lighting system in the 400-foot tunnel along the Hop River State Park Trail at Bolton Notch State Park.
The project improves visibility and safety for thousands of walkers, runners, and cyclists while preserving the park’s natural character. With more than 86,700 trail uses recorded in 2024, this section is an important community connection and part of the East Coast Greenway.
This improvement reflects years of community advocacy, careful planning, and collaboration. It also supports the state’s continued investment in outdoor recreation through the Restore Connecticut State Parks initiative.
Thank you to CTDOT, local leaders, advocates, and everyone who helps keep Connecticut’s parks and trails safe, accessible, and welcoming.

Tunnel Road Stairs Eagle Scout Project
In October 2013, Nick Murray completed his Eagle Scout project at Tunnel Road with help from approximately 15 Boy Scouts from Troop 86 and 12 adults.
Working with the Vernon Parks and Recreation Department, the team replaced and reinforced the wooden steps, extended the upper wall, and helped prevent further trail erosion. The improvements also discouraged cyclists from riding down the steep access path, creating a safer and more durable connection to the trail.
